Websites are only as good as the content they provide. Your website needs to inform the reader in a fast and efficient manner the basics – ‘who, what when where and why’. People need to find your contact information in an easy way and have the ability to locate your website using a range of different devises, including phones, tables and desktop machines. Most people use search engines to find information, so having your article or post found for the terms people are searching for, requires a bit of search engine optimisation (SEO), however this should not necessarily be the main focus.
Once your site has covered the basics think about how you can make the website journey more informative or interesting for the viewer. Adding rich content into a blog can increase the amount of people that will visit your website. People will find, not only the basic information, but also additional information they might not have otherwise considered.
Here’s our 10 tips for content creation
1. How much do you know?
When it comes to writing blog posts you can utilise your knowledge, skills and abilities. Are you good at what you do? Do you know information or interesting ides and facts that you can share? Think about what you can offer to the reader and go from there.
2. Keep it real
Write in a style that you find easy to create and easy for people to understand. If you work within an industry that uses specific terms or acronyms make sure to explain what they mean to the end user. Check your spelling and have someone read the post before you hit publish.
3. Add images for interest
Add in original edited images that add value to your post. Relevant images with alt tags are important to keep your website user friendly and accessible to everyone. Edit your images and make sure they are the correct size for uploading to your website.
4. Start with something catchy
Think about your opening line and make it catchy. Entice the reader using a catchy opening line that leads the viewer onto read more. Something like ‘Visit the Kimberley’ isn’t anywhere as interesting as something like ‘Will you miss out on experiencing a Kimberley adventure?’. Often asking a question can relate to the viewer, create a connection. You’ll notice I linked to one of our clients, using work play can be a good tool for create a title or opening line.
5. Focus on your main topic
Before you get started map out the main focus of your blog post. Is it to inform people? Provide more information about your location or products you sell? Whatever your main focus is stay on topic. It’s OK to value add but keep coming back to the main reason you have written the post.
6. Beginning, middle and an end
Remember back at school when you were taught how to write a story. Blog writing isn’t much different. Lead you reader on a journey of discovery, even if the post is factual. Create an introduction that outlines what your post is about, fill the middle with the details and nitty-gritty and finish off with a conclusion.
7. Get Creative
All blog posts should be interesting to read. OK, You will keep your reader for longer on your website if you write interesting and informative content. Don’t be afraid to get creative, if your style is to joke around a bit, add in a joke or two, or use a few puns. If you’re in the business of selling something for enriching lifestyle choices, such as aboriginal tourism, add flavour to your post by leading the reader on a virtual journey.
8. Celebrate what you have to offer
Spend time researching and creating unique content that only your website has. All websites are covered by copy-write laws and as such your unique content can not be copied. However, as such other peoples content can not be copied either. Read other peoples posts for inspiration, but keep your content unique. Your writing style is unique to you, this is a chance to showcase you, your products, your services and your skills. Celebrate what you have to offer by being creative and spending time to create unique content that your audience will love.
9. Don’t proofread your post right away
Take your time to create the content. Making sure you get everything onto the page that you would like to share. After you have a unique amount of works and are happy with the overall post, spend time going back though, checking, spellchecking and adding in anything you may have missed the first time around. Sometimes it take a few goes to get the content correctly onto the website.
10. Don’t stress the small stuff
Having something is better than having nothing at all. Adding additional content your website is easy once you know how. Have fun with your writing style and if you make a mistake, that’s OK. Unlike content that is printed onto paper, like a brochure, your website content is dynamic and can be modified, changed or updated at anytime.
